Lorenzo de' Medici (1449-1492) is one of the most prominent figures of the Italian Renaissance. Under his government, the city of Florence gained an unprecedented political power and became the center of European cultural life. Known also as Lorenzo il Magnifico for his great love for art and literature, he surrounded himself with the most famous artists and thinkers of his time (Angelo Poliziano, Luigi Pulci, Leon Battista Alberti, Giovanni Pico della Mirandola, Girolamo Savonarola and many others). He was himself a very prolific writer. The poem presented in this collection is taken from Canti Carnascialeschi probably written around 1484. |
