Among the scholars and critics who have worked on Flaubert, René Dumesnil has established critical editions of the texts, Victor Brombert, Jonathan Culler, William Paulson and Benjamin Bart have proposed modernist readings of Flaubert's writings. One of the most famous works on Flaubert is Sartre's biography, L'Idiot de la famille: Gustave Flaubert, 2 vol. (1971).
